Girls roundup: WMU victorious, VBC sees success

Winfield-Mt. Union 70, Wapello 24
Winfield dominated in the contest with Wapello.
The Wolves outscored the Arrows 31-14 in the first half and 39-10 in the second.
Bradie Buffington scored 19 for the Wolves. Jobey Malone added 14 points and nine rebounds. Keely Malone chipped in 10 points and nine assists.
Winfield-Mt. Union 52, WACO 25 (Saturday)
The Wolves got their eighth win of the season in a win over the Warriors.
WACO was held to single digits in all quarters, but Winfield-Mt. Union didn’t pull away until the second half.
After two quarters, W-MU held a 20-10 lead. In the second half, the Wolves outscored the Warriors 32-15.
Bradie Buffington scored 17, while pulling down 14 rebounds for Winfield. Melina Oepping added nine points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Jobey Malone ended with seven points and seven rebounds.
Winfield-Mt. Union is now 8-2 on the year, and WACO 5-4.
Van Buren 51, Cardinal 38
Van Buren pulled out its 13th straight win in the series against Cardinal.
Kadence Nusbaum finished with a game-high 24 for Van Buren. Emma Becker scored 15 for the Comets.
The Warriors move to 2-6 on the season, while Cardinal drops to 3-6.
Pekin 36, Hillcrest Academy 21
Pekin used two big quarters to take down the Ravens Friday night.
The Panthers outscored Hillcrest 19-8 in the first half and 17-13 in the second.
Pekin was led in scoring by Makenzie Dahlstrom. She scored 12 points. Emma Philips added seven points and seven rebounds. Sarah Eubanks ended with six points, five rebounds and five assists.
Pekin is now 2-6 on the year and Hillcrest Academy 1-7.
Cascade 64, Mid-Prairie 51
The Golden Hawks fell just short in the matchup with the Cougars.
Mid-Prairie was down 33-23 after the second, but a huge 21-10 third quarter put Mid-Prairie on top 44-43 heading into the fourth.
Cascade would turn around and win the fourth 21-7.
For Mid-Prairie, Maddie Nonnenmann led the way with 17 points. Amara Jones ended with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Landry Pacha finished with eight points.
Mid-Prairie is now 3-3 on the season.
Highland 61, Columbus 23
Highland was efficient on both sides of the ball in the win over Columbus.
The Huskies outscored the Wildcats, 13-6, 21-7, 15-3 and 12-7 across the four quarters.
Abbi Stransky scored 21 points for Highland, while Dani Laughlin finished with 16. Sarah Burton added 10.
For the Wildcats, Sera Vela scored nine and grabbed six rebounds. Libby White ended with seven points. Frannie Sosa scored three.
Highland improves to 4-4 and Columbus moves to 2-7.
Lynnville-Sully 42, Keota 35
Keota held an early 7-0 lead after one quarter against Lynnville-Sully, but the Eagles would go on to get outscored by the Hawks 11-5, 16-10 and 15-13 through the rest of the contest.
Keota is now 2-8 on the year.
Danville 62, New London 19
New London was outscored 20-4, 19-4, 14-6 and 9-4 in the contest.
The Tigers move to 0-10 on the season.
