Washington junior Mackenzie Adrian scored with just 12 seconds left in the overtime period, lifting the Demon girls? soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Oskaloosa on Monday night.
As time was winding down, Adrian got a breakaway. An Oskaloosa defender knocked the ball away from behind, but Adrian recovered the ball nearly even with the face of the goal. Adrian lifted a kick over the goalkeeper?s hands, and the ball hit the far post and slowly rolled into the goal to give the Demons the win.
?It was such a hard angle, I don?t know how she made it,? Washington head coach Kyle Collins said. ?It must have had just the right spin.?
Washington (3-8) trailed 2-0 at halftime, but had the wind at its back in the second half. Midway through the second half, the Indians were whistled for a handball in their own box, giving the Demons a penalty kick. Washington junior Haley Ross calmly knocked the shot into the back of the net to trim Oskaloosa?s lead to 2-1.
Seven minutes later, Adrian scored the equalizer on a breakaway. The Indians made one final push to score in the closing minutes of regulation, but the Demons were able to fend them off.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime period, but neither could get it into the net until Adrian scored on her tough shot with 12 ticks left.
Collins was proud of his team?s come-from-behind victory.
?They got ahead 2-0, but the girls kept their heads up and gave 110 percent and came back and got the win,? he said. ?I was excited and the girls were excited. Last year we lost to them 6-1, so it was nice to come back and get a win.?
Washington, which has now won three of its last four matches, travels to Centerville this evening for a non-conference contest.
