Play in all four classes of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state golf tournaments was suspended Tuesday at different points in the opening round.
All will start early today to finish the rounds, then begin the remaining 18 holes immediately. Plans to regroup players according to first-round scores have been abandoned. Players will stay in the original groups and keep playing.
'We got anywhere from 10 to 15 holes played and we will pick up from that point (today) so some will have play in close to 25 holes,” Washington coach Len Kull said. The Class 3A meet is being played at Otter Creek in Ankeny.
The Demons' Kiki Guo is currently tied for second at one over par with former Washington teammate Anna Nacos, who plays for Dubuque Wahlert. Wahlert is tied for first in the team score with Grinnell. Washington is in fourth.
Nacos is in a foursome with Washington's Josie Tanner.
In Class 2A at Ames Golf and Country Club, play was halted with most groups having one or two holes left.
After 17 holes, Mid-Prairie's Abbi Patterson sits in a tie for eighth place at 10 over par.
'Abbi could not have have picked a better day to play some of her best golf,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. 'Tee to green, she really kept the ball in play and putted exceptionally well, especially considering how saturated the golf course is. It's pretty much casual water everywhere. It was a shame we had to come in with only a hole to play, but I'm sure she will be eager to get back out there and pick up where she left off.”
In 1A at Marshalltown's American Legion Golf Course, Columbus' Aubrey Duncan is tied for ninth at 11 over par through 14 holes.
The Demons all went out to eat for supper together Tuesday evening, then will try to get some sleep for the earlier start.
'We will just continue playing until they get 36 holes in or until the weather chases them off the course again,” Kull said. 'We knew it would be tough coming in. It's a tough course and there's a lot of distractions. I have to give the girls credit, though, they soldiered through. Some scores are good, some are bad and some are in between and that's the way golf goes. Hopefully, we will be done before the weather comes.”
The 3A tourney got a late start because of the rainr and then lightning chased thems off the course.
'It has been raining ever since,” Kull said.
