Girls state wrestling kicks off
14 Union area wrestlers vie for 1A titles

Over a dozen Union area girls wrestlers will flock to Xtream Areana in Coralville on Thursday for the 2026 Iowa high school girls state wrestling championships. The two-day event will crown champions in Classes 1 and 2A.
In total, 14 area wrestlers from six schools will compete for titles in 1A. The first round and quarterfinals take place Thursday, with the semifinals Friday morning and the championship matches Friday night.
Samantha Lyons of Fairfield was one of two area wrestlers to earn the No. 2 seed in their bracket. Lyons went 2-0 at at 170 pounds in the Class 1A Region 6 qualifier at Wapello last Friday. The junior returns to state after fourth place finish last season.
Fairfield will also be represented by Kendra Allison at 235 pounds. Allison finished second in the 1A-6 qualifier.
Both Highland and Pekin will be represented by three wrestlers at state. Highland’s Adley Sweeting earned the No. 2 seed at state in the 120-pound bracket. Chloe Sexton is the No. 12 seed at 190 and Maiya Singbeil earned the No. 11 seed at 140.
Pekin’s Lexa Nelson earned the No. 6 seed at 110 pounds. Hailey Pedrick will wrestle as the No. 6 seed at 145 and Lila Miller is the No. 11 seed at 120.
Mid-Prairie, Sigourney-Keota and Van Buren County each have two entries in this year’s tournament. Ellie Callahan returns to Xtream arena for the third time in her career after she missed out on qualification last season. Callahan won the 190-pound bracket at the 1A-6 qualifier and will be the No. 7 seed in Coralville.
Sophie Miller will also represent the Golden Hawks at state. Miller qualified for state for the first time in her career and will be the No. 6 seed in the 145-pound bracket.
Sadie Clarahan of of Sigourney-Keota will join Sweeting in the 120-pound bracket as the No. 13 seed. Kia Montgomery earned the No. 10 seed in the 125-pound bracket.
Brystol Wiley (100 pounds) and Armoney Adams (105) will represent Van Buren County. The pair finished first and second, respectively, in their brackets at the 1A-6 qualifier.
