When the dust settled at the end of the state meet last season, Davenport Assumption and Mt. Pleasant were the top two teams in Class 3A.
This season, they could cause problems for the Washington girls? track team, as both teams will compete in the Demons? state qualifying meet on Thursday.
Leading the charge for the Demons will be senior Macy Marek, who will look to return to Des Moines in the 100- and 200-meter dashes; and coming off a conference championship in both events, she knows that the competition will be fierce.
?Thursday is still going to be really tough,? Marek said. ?We have one of the toughest districts in the state by far. I just have to run as fast as I can and keep up with the girls I have a competition with.?
Junior Morgan Kimball, who also claimed a conference title in the 400-meter dash, is also looking to make the trip to Des Moines next week. She said the key will be making sure she stays within her ability and running her own race.
?I?m not necessarily feeling confident, because there are so many things that can go wrong,? Kimball said. ?I just have to run what I can. I have to give it what I have.?
Tschantz said she thinks her team has a number of events that could qualify for state if everyone competes at their highest ability.
?It could be numerous people,? Tschantz said. ?Dylann (Schluetter) has a great shot, McKayla (Miller) has a great shot, the 4x800, the shuttle hurdle, Macy, Morgan, our sprint medley, 4x400 or our 4x100. There will be numerous opporutinites ? we just have to see what everyone puts together.?
