CHARITON — Four of the area’s girls wrestling teams were in action at Chariton High School on Saturday for the Chargers’ home meet.
Pekin, Cardinal, WACO and Sigourney-Keota were all on the mats for the tournament. The Panthers slipped into the Top-6, scoring 82 points for sixth, to lead the Union area.
Pekin had two champions in the tournament. Hailey Pedrick flew to the top in the 135-pound weight class to take home the bracket, and Lila Miller rolled to first place at 140 pounds.
Pedrick won three matches on the day, all by fall. Her final pin of the day was at 135 pounds, when she defeated Ottumwa’s Jaydee Bircher in 1 minute, 47 seconds.
Miller had a busy day, pinning five opponents. She pinned the first four in less than 40 seconds, and ended the tournament with a fall over Kyla Andrew of BGM, beating her in 1:31.
Lexa Nelson took second place at 110 pounds. Nelson had two pins on the day, taking down Albia’s Sophie Hemann and Cardinal’s Kendall Birk.
Speaking of the Comets, Cardinal finished right behind Pekin in the final standings, scoring 72.5 points
Cardinal used three second-place finishers to jump up to seventh place in the standings. The Comets didn’t have a champion on the day.
Macy Grove took second in the 130-pound bracket. She collected a pair of pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals before falling to BGM’s Coral Lowry in the first place match.
Ajaah Cox took second at 155 pounds, getting a technical fall and a pin before dropping the first place match to Wapello’s Tatum Wolford.
Skyllar Welch took second at 170 pounds. Welch had a fall and a major decision in her first two matches, but fell to Colfax-Mingo’s Emmalyn Buchman in the first place match.
Cardinal also had one third place finisher. Shakayla Uehling took bronze in the 235-pound bracket.
WACO was 10th place, scoring 52 points on the day. The Warriors had a winner and a third-place finisher at the meet.
At 110 pound, Rylee Rice dominated the field. Rice had three pins on the day en route to winning her bracket.
Elyssa Graber took third place at 105. Graber went 3-1 on the day, falling only to Albia’s Brianna Wolfer in the semifinal match.
Sigourney-Keota had just two wrestlers going, but one of those wrestlers blew through the 115-pound field to win a title. Reanah Utterback still is undefeated this year after collecting three more pins, including a win in 2:34 against Amiah Lint of BGM.
