SIGOURNEY — Sigourney-Keota hosted a packed girls wrestling event on Tuesday, as a whopping 23 teams from around Iowa gathered at Sigourney High School for an intense opening tournament.
Among those 23 teams were six area squads. Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Mid-Prairie, Pekin, Sigourney-Keota, WACO and Washington were all a part of the festivities.
It was Pekin that fared the best as a team, putting up 128 points, for third. Mid-Prairie scored 81 points, for eighth place. SK put up 71, for ninth. Columbus/WMU scored 35, for 20th. Washington was 21st, with 31, and WACO scored six points to take 22nd.
Pekin had some big moments from its returning state qualifiers, including 110-pounder Lexa Nelson, who took first place. Nelson went 3-0, winning the bracket over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Kayda Freeman via a third-period pin fall.
Two other Panthers made the championship bout. Lila Miller finished second at 130 pounds, and Hailey Pedrick finished second at 140.
Mid-Prairie had two champions at the event. Sophie Miller won her bracket, taking out Moravia’s Breegan Ellison in 1:27 for the 155-pound title, and Ellie Callahan cruised through a three-wrestler bracket at 190 pounds, pinning J.Z. Ward of Grinnell in 55 seconds for the title.
SK didn’t have anybody take first or second. Karley Greiner was the best finisher for the Cobras, placing third at 155.
Columbus/WMU had two fourth place finishers, in Rozlynn Garza at 130 pounds and Jada Moats at 170.
Washington’s best finisher was Brynnlee Flynn, who took second place at 100 pounds. WACO didn’t have any placewinners.
One day prior, Cardinal hosted a couple of area teams at its home duals to begin the year. Van Buren County knocked off the Comets 60-24. Cardinal beat Highland 42-22. VBC crushed Keokuk 72-12, and Highland picked up one draw, a 30-30 tie with Keokuk.
