Golden Gloves to be held in Iowa City

The annual Golden Gloves boxing tournament, which is normally held in Des Moines, will be held in Iowa City this weekend.

The state championship event begins on Saturday and ends on Sunday. It is the first Golden Gloves tournament to be held since 2019, and the first time the tournament has ever been held out side of Des Moines.

Over 60 boxers have registered for the competition, which will include a junior division of 15 to 17-year-old athletes for the firs time.

Boxers will come from all over Iowa to compete. Most registered hail from Johnson County, the quad cities or Des Moines.

Fights start at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday’s festivities will begin at 1 p.m. Doors will open one hour ahead of time for each.
