WASHINGTON — A couple of schools just 20 minutes apart met up in Washington for a Washington County rivalry game on Monday night. A close game throughout was all Golden Hawks as the Mid-Prairie girls ran past Washington with an electric fourth quarter.
The two teams were knotted up at the end of the third period, but Mid-Prairie’s defense played outstanding in the final eight minutes, holding Washington to just three fourth quarter points en route to an 18-3 win.
“I thought our defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daniel Hershberger. “We did a much better job of rotating, needing to get where we needed to be and not giving up wide-open shots.”
Washington had already clawed back from a tough opening period, which saw Mid-Prairie jump out to a 9-2 lead. The Golden Hawks led 17-11 at the halftime break, but Washington began to light it up from the outside in the third, bringing the score to 29-29 at halftime.
Once the final quarter started, it was Mid-Prairie that stole back all the momentum. The Golden Hawks scored a game-high 18 points in the last period and turned what was a barnburner into a 15-point victory.
“We just didn't make enough shots, and defensively we weren't good enough,” said Washington head coach Shannon Rugg. “Our effort was there, we just didn't execute very well.”
It was Mid-Prairie’s fourth-straight win in the rivalry. The Golden Hawks have now won nine of the last 10 matchups between the two schools.
Freshman Brooklyn Schneider had the hot hand for Mid-Prairie, scoring 15 points on the night. Callie Huber filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Nora Pennington scored seven points. Jovie Evans and Brylee Gearhart each had four, and both Olivia Swartzentruber and Izzy Kite chipped in two.
Washington’s Kendall Hinrichsen and Jacey Berg each scored nine points in the loss. Lauren Hinrichsen scored five points. Taylor Bartholomew and Oaklee Sobaski scored three points apiece. Addison Miller put in two, and Maci Williams scored one.
