Neither Mid-Prairie nor Mt. Pleasant were able to withstand a tough Fort Madison team in Mt. Pleasant's triangular on Thursday night. The Bloodhounds defeated Mt. Pleasant 48-30, and topped Mid-Prairie 54-30 to sweep the day. Mid-Prairie picked up a 45-34 win over Mt. Pleasant in the final dual of the night.
It was a Southeast Conference showdown in the first dual. Fort Madison won four of the first five matches to upend the Panthers in a conference battle.
Mt. Pleasant had a thrilling sudden victory win by Chayse Irving at 170 pounds, and picked up pins from Sam Carrasco at 220 pounds, Gannon McNamee at 120 pounds and Bowen Davis at 132 pounds, but the Bloodhounds never trailed on the scoreboard.
Mid-Prairie got a boost in the heavier weights to start its matchup with Fort Madison, but the Bloodhounds won every match from 120 pounds to 152 pounds to run past the Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie had three pins against Fort Madison in the loss. Ben Meader (182 pounds), Cael Garvey (195 pounds) and Mose Yoder (113 pounds) all tallied six team points apiece for the Hawks.
Mt. Pleasant had a head start against Mid-Prairie when Irving took the 170-pound match to make it 6-0 Panthers early. Mid-Prairie won the next four bourts, including pins from Maeder at 182 pounds, Josh Wallington at 220 pounds and Gannon Callahan at 285 pounds.
The Golden Hawks led 24-6 after the first five matches, and 33-12 after eight. Mt. Pleasant was able to come back to temporarily take the lead, taking advantage of a Ben Carthey pin at 132 pounds and major decision from Reean Seberg at 145 pounds. Mid-Prairie's Owen Trimpe, however, picked up a pin at 152 pounds to help the Golden Hawks regain the lead at 39-34, and a Panther forfeit at 160 pounds ended it.
'It was a team effort all the way up and down the lineup right there,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey. 'Out guys stepped up, and they had a good energy tonight and got the ‘W'.”
Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint said he was happy with how his team battled. The Panthers were forced to wrestle up in a handful of weights to avoid forfeits.
'There were several matches that went down to the wire,” Blint said. 'And there were several matches where we ended up getting a fall or winning the match because the guys kept fighting. That's the only thing we can ask for.”
