FORT DODGE — The Mid-Prairie girls’ cross-country team lost a three-time Class 2A state champion to graduation last spring, yet the Golden Hawks still did what needed to be done to get back on top.
One year after failing to win gold individually or team-wise for the first time in a decade, the Golden Hawks went right back to their winning ways on Saturday.
In a tight team race, the Golden Hawks scored 84 points to win its sixth state title in the last eight years. That total was eight points better than second-place Unity Christian.
“It’s absolutely unbelievable,” sophomore Brooklyn Stutzman told The Gazette after leading the Golden Hawks with an eighth-place finish. “We came into the season ranked 14th in the state, and we won. I can’t believe it.”
Stutzman crossed the tape in 19 minutes, 20.6 seconds. Teammates Rachel Hostetler and Kendal Landstrum joined her on the podium, taking 14th and 15th place respectively to put three Mid-Prairie runners in the Top-15.
The championship just the latest for head coach Mark Hostetler, who has now coached four daughters to a state team title, including Rachel, who is a freshman this season.
“He always has us prepared,” said Dessa Poll, the lone senior on the state roster.
Tessa Brokaw finished 29th overall. Poll took 73rd. Hannah Rodgers finished 77th. Rebekah Wallington finished 97th.
The Mid-Prairie boys scored 128 points, falling 15 points behind top-ranked Oelwein for team gold. Defending state champion Emmett Swartzentruber was fourth overall, crossing the tape in 15:56.4. That was just one second away from third, and 1.1 seconds off from second.
Preston Yutzy took 14th place to join Swartzentruber on the podium. Jayse Yoder was 21st. Max Swartzentruber finished 68th. Luke Brokaw was 75th. Thomas Flynn finished 93rd. Jesse Stultz took 118th.
The Union area had two Top-10 finishers in Class 1A. Chloe Glosser of Pekin was third, crossing the tap in 18:31.9. Marie Yoder finished eighth, in 19:16.6. Yoder’s teammate, Siena Stanerson, took 32nd.
Van Buren County’s Kayley Snowgren finished 75th overall. Rylee Phillips took 87th.
In the Class 1A boys’ race, Columbus finished 12th overall and Van Buren County took 13th. The Wildcats scored 277 points, led by Ty Muniz’ 25th-place finish, and the Warriors scored 286, led by a 27th-place finish by Lincoln Bainbridge.
The top Union area runner in the Class 1A boys’ race was Winfield-Mount Union’s Kohlby Newsom. Newsom crossed the tape in 16:29.4, finishing ninth, to get on the podium. WACO’s Jude Dykstra wasn’t too far behind, crossing in 16:46.6, for 19th.
