ALBIA — It took a lot of time and a lot of kicks at the soccer ball Monday but the result was triumphant for Mid-Prairie.
The Golden Hawks won a postseason boys match that sent the 15th-ranked Golden Hawks to the No. 8 Blue Demons home for a 1-0 victory. Mid-Prairie now goes to the No. 4 Comets home in West Liberty for Wednesday’s substate final. West Liberty survived against Clarke 6-4.
After a scoreless first and second halves, two overtime periods were played without a goal. Penalty kicks were then the deciding factor.
Mid-Prairie scored three to the home team’s two for the official score of 1-0. Jarret Hoffman, Tucker Miller and Owen Trimpe found the net on their kicks.
Goal keeper Justice Jones made seven saves in the match, then came through by stopping the Blue Demon penalty kicks.
Mid-Prairie and Albia are both 11-4, but Mid-Prairie is alive and the Blue Demons are not.
Mid-Prairie captain Zeus Fugate unloads on the ball in a match earlier this season. Monday No. 15 Mid-Prairie won a Class 1A substate semifinal 1-0 at No. 8 Albia with a 3-2 win in penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods. (Doug Brenneman/Union)
