WELLMAN — Mid-Prairie and Fairfield girls basketball kicked off the winter season on Tuesday in a non-conference bout.
The Golden Hawks and Trojans traded blows early, but Mid-Prairie used some stout defense and efficient play around the rim to get past Fairfield 82-40.
Mid-Prairie got the scoring going early with a layin from Callie Huber, but Fairfield quickly answered back with three straight points from Savannah Hollander giving the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
After a three ball from Nora Pennington put the Golden Hawks back on top, 5-3, they would never let the lead slip.
The closest Fairfield would come was two points, which came off a Hollander steal two possessions later making it 7-5.
From then on out, a pair of layins from Huber and then Jovi Evans kicked off what would be a 16-5 run to the end of the first period.
Mid-Prairie kept its foot on the gas in the second as it scored eight unanswered over the first two and a half minutes of the quarter, building up 31-10 lead.
Fairfield’s first bucket came from Hollander at the 5:48 mark. She was the only Trojan to score in the quarter, notching the next eight points for Fairfield including a three with three seconds left on the clock.
Mid-Prairie went on to score 17 in that span, outscoring the Trojans 25-12 in the quarter for a 48-22 halftime lead.
Hollander finished with 17 of Fairfield’s first half points. The other five went to Grace Lyon, who went down early with an ankle injury.
Fairfield did all it could to try and put together a run as Hollander and Briana Steele scored back-to-back baskets to begin the third, but it wouldn’t make a difference as they scored just five more points the rest of the period to Mid-Prairie’s 19.
The same held true in the fourth as the Golden Hawks went on to win the quarter 15-9 to end it.
Jovi Evans led the Golden Hawks with 15 points, six steals and four rebounds in the win. Callie Huber ended with 14 points, six boards and four steals. Nora Pennington notched 12 points, six steals and five rebounds. Harper Pacha had eight points and Katelyn Harland finished with two points and seven assists.
Mid-Prairie begins the season at 1-0, while Fairfield opens 0-1.
