Mid-Prairie?s defense made a late stand, and the Golden Hawks edged visiting Clear Creek-Amana 10-7 on Friday night at Doc Sattler Field.
Clear Creek-Amana quarterback Konrad Moore ran for a 6-yard touchdown with 6:17 left in the game to trim Mid-Prairie?s lead to three points, but the Golden Hawks put together a drive that took over four minutes off of the clock. The Clippers (1-1) got the ball back at their own 14-yard line with 1:56 remaining, but the Golden Hawks held tough.
Junior Eesaa Baylor scored a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to put the Golden Hawks up 7-0. Then junior kicker Austin Errthum nailed a 58-yard field goal ? the longest in Mid-Prairie history and the third-longest in state history ? with 58 seconds remaining in the first half to put the Golden Hawks up 10-0. Even though Mid-Prairie didn?t score after the break, the Golden Hawks (1-1) hung on for the win.
Baylor rushed for 98 yards and a score in victory, and junior Canaan Powell added 57 yards. Powell also had 11 tackles to lead the Golden Hawk defense.
