Roundup of Tuesday’s Union area small school girls basketball games

Several area small school teams were in action Tuesday night. Mid-Prairie and Highland continued their dominance against conference competition.
Columbus won an all-Union area matchup against Winfield-Mt. Union. Van Buren County also picked up a conference victory.
Here’s a roundup of Tuesday’s Union area small school girls basketball action.
No. 12 Mid-Prairie 72, Wilton 24
The Golden Hawks had no trouble with the winless Beavers. Brooklyn Schneider led Mid-Prairie with 18 points and added three rebounds and four steals.
Morgyn Bender wasn’t far behind Schneider with 17 points along with six steals. Jeorgia Evans had 11 points, six rebounds and five steals. Tessa Bombei finished with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and three takeaways.
Highland 53, Wapello 38
The Huskies overcame a 12-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter to knock off the Arrows. Kamryn Fink acheived a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Hailey Brun and Mackenzie Davis also finished in double figures with 10 points each.
Columbus 54, Winfield-Mt. Union 30
The Wildcats outscored the Wolves 34-12 in the second half Tuesday. Isabel Rendon and Ellie Sanders each scored 12 points. Sanders added nine rebounds, four assists and four steals and Rendon had four boards and assists along with six steals.
Kennedy Woepking and Naveiah Garza finished with 11 points each. The pair also combined for 10 rebounds and 10 steals.
Van Buren County 42, Holy Trinity Catholic 23
Sophia Jirak led the way for the Warriors in their fifth win of the season. The senior finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Marlee Mertens was also in double figures with 13 points. She chipped in three steals on defense.
Lone Tree 53, Pekin 36
Pekin outscored Lone Tree 13-10 in the third quarter, but couldn’t overcome a 32-16 halftime deficit in a defeat against the Lions. The Panthers drop to 3-2 on the season.
Central Lee 58, New London 25
New London dropped to 0-5 after a road defeat to the Hawks. Paige Shull-Collins was the lone player in double figures for the Tigers with 12 points. She added a pair of rebounds and four steals.
Albia 55, Cardinal 41
The Comets took a 12-8 lead into the second quarter but quickly lost momentum. Albia outscored Cardinal in each of the next three quarters, including 20-9 in the fourth.
Kolbi Saner and Summer LaRue co-led Cardinal with 14 points each. Saner added six rebounds and four steals. LaRue tallied five steals.
