It was a busy day for the Union coverage area's Class 2A wrestlers, who were split up into two different sectionals on Saturday, but it was well worth the work for 14 matmen who advanced to the district tournament next weekend.
Mid-Prairie and Fairfield were at the Class 2A Sectional 9 meet in Albia where nine of the area's 14 wrestlers advanced. The Golden Hawks account for almost half of the area's district qualifiers, with six. Fairfield saw three names go through in Sectional 9.
Sectional 10 was held at Davenport Assumption, and five area wrestlers advanced from there. Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union walked away with three qualifiers, and both Washington and Mt. Pleasant had one.
Mid-Prairie had a big night in the heavier weights. The Golden Hawks had five sectional champions from 160-295.
Vinne Bowlin won his bracket at 160. Ben Meader finished first at 182. Cael Garvey took the 195 bracket. Josh Wallington took first at 220 pounds, and Gannon Callahan won at 285.
Mid-Prairie had one wrestler advance with a second-place finish. Mose Yoder will represent the Golden Hawks at 113 pounds after taking the silver.
Fairfield had three wrestlers get through to districts, all in the middle weights. Cohyn Roach (138), Payton Cline (145) and Logan Adam (152) all finished second in their respective weight classes to extend their seasons by at least one week.
Columbus/WMU had two winners in the sectional and had one wrestler get through with a second-place finish.
The Wildcats' Chance Malone dominated the 285 pound bracket to cruise on to the next stage. Lane Scorpio won the 113-pound bracket without ever having to wrestle a match, as only two matmen were in the bracket and he won the first-place match by forfeit. Ethan Palmer took second at 195 pounds to help Columbus/WMU finish with three qualifiers.
Mt. Pleasant's Sam Carrasco will represent his school in the district tournament. He was the lone Panther through after winning the 220-pound bracket.
Washington's Ayden Frazer will be the only Demon wrestling at districts. Frazer finished second place at 182 pounds to punch his ticket to next weekend.
All Class 2A wrestlers will compete in the District 5 meet at Mt. Pleasant, which is set to begin at 12 p.m. The Top-2 wrestlers from each weight class will move on to the state tournament.
