The 2024 cross-country season saw some big time risers in the Union coverage area, especially on the girls’ side.
Not only did a handful of individuals see themselves rise in the ranks this fall, but so did a couple of teams. One of those teams rose above the rest, as Mid-Prairie rose from outside of the Top-10 in the first month of the season to the number one team in Class 2A.
Mid-Prairie’s state championship helped the Golden Hawks grab four names on the All-Union list, including Coach Mark Hostetler.
Coach: Mark Hostetler
Coach Mark Hostetler’s Mid-Prairie girls were right back on top in 2024, winning the Class 2A state title after being nowhere near the Top-5 in the early season rankings.
Led by a young core of runners, Mid-Prairie scored 84 points at the Class 2A race, outdueling Unity Christian by eight points to earn back the crown.
Coach Hostetler’s bunch put three runners in the Top-15, all underclassmen, so cross-country fans might want to get ready for another long-term Golden Hawk reign.
Captain: Chloe Glosser (11), junior, Pekin
Pekin’s Chloe Glosser has been the undisputed queen of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference since the moment she stepped into a high school race.
Glosser not only led the Panthers to a conference title at the 2024 SEISC meet, but won individually by over 45 seconds, earning her third championship in three years of running.
At the state meet, Glosser cemented her spot as the top runner in the Union coverage area by finishing third place in the Class 1A state race, beating the fourth place time by nearly 30 seconds.
Brooklyn Stutzman, sophomore, Mid-Prairie
Mid-Prairie’s Brooklyn Stutzman had to step up to be a leader for the Golden Hawks as just a sophomore, and she was a huge reason why Mid-Prairie took home a state title.
Stutzman finished third place in the River Valley Conference race, learning Mid-Prairie to an RVC championship. Then, it was time to compete at the state meet.
At state, Stutzman finished eighth place overall, leading a trio of Top-15 runners to the podium.
Marie Yoder, sophomore, Hillcrest Academy
Marie Yoder took second in the SEISC race for the second year in a row, and set herself up for another big run through the postseason.
Yoder, who had led her team to second place overall in the conference, was ready to represent for the Ravens at the state meet, after qualifying with flying colors. Once in Fort Dodge, she proved her worth and then some, finishing eighth in the Class 1A race to earn a spot-on the podium.
Rachel Hostetler, freshman, Mid-Prairie
The next in line in the Hostetler running dynasty can now say she’s a team state champion, much like her older sisters.
Before state, however, Hostetler took sixth place in the River Valley meet, the top freshman in the race.
Once in Fort Dodge, Hostetler grinded out a 14th-place finish, making the podium at the Class 2A race, just one of two freshmen to do so.
Kendal Landstrum, sophomore, Mid-Prairie
Mid-Prairie’s Kendal Landstrum was a huge boost to the team in her sophomore year, especially when it mattered most.
Landstrum was the eighth-place runner at the 2024 RVC meet, giving the Golden Hawks three in the Top-10, and a lot of hope for the upcoming state race.
In Fort Dodge, Landstrum took 15th place overall, finishing right behind teammate Hostetler and earning a spot-on the podium.
Iris Dahl, junior, Washington
In Iris Dahl’s first two years running for Washington High School, she had already made a big name for herself, but the one thing she hadn’t done was earn the Demons an individual conference title. That all changed in 2024.
Dahl outraced a tough Southeast Conference field to win the league crown in Keokuk. She then earned a spot at her third-straight state meet, and finished the year with a 32nd-place finish in the Class 3A girls’ race.
Dahl also led the Demons to state as a team, where Washington made school history, putting both the girls and boys' teams in Fort Dodge for the first time ever.
Siena Stanerson, junior, Hillcrest Academy
Hillcrest’s Siena Stanerson was one of the top runners in the SEISC all season long, and she proved that with a fourth-place finish at the conference meet, putting two Ravens in the Top-4 and helping her team take second place overall.
Stanerson, along with teammate Marie Yoder, advanced to the Class 1A state race and showed out on the biggest stage, finishing in 32nd place overall.
