Golden Hawks split RVC contests

WELLMAN - While the Mid-Prairie boys have won five straight basketball games after a River Valley Conference win Tuesday against visiting Wilton, the Golden Hawk girls lost to even their record at 5-5.
A season-opening defeat at Williamsburg for the boys was the last loss and a 61-44 win over the Beavers makes the record 5-1.
Losing 32-23 at halftime, the Mid-Prairie girls won the next two quarters 10-8 and 12-7 but lost 47-45 to Wilton (7-3).
Phelan Hostetler had 15 points and Myah Lugar 12 with the help of Hawk teammates Nora Pennington and Amara Jones, who combined for nine assists. Lugar had five assists and five rebounds. Maddie Nonennmann had seven rebounds and seven points.
Kelsey Drake had 20 points and Ella Caffrey 15 for the Beavers win.
The Golden Hawk boys had a great start that led to a 22-10 advantage at the end of a quarter. Although the lead dropped from 12 to seven for a 30-23 halftime score, it was 44-32 starting the last period.
Carter Harmsen had his career-high at Williamsburg with 35 and powered this win with over half of the Golden Hawks points. He had nine rebounds and shot 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, 12-of-26 overall to total 33 points. Wil Cavanagh had seven rebounds, Jackson Pennington and Alex Bean combined for 10 assists and 13 points. Aidan Rath had seven points and four rebounds.
Caden Kirkman led the Beavers with 13.
