KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After vanquishing six Iowa teams to start the season, the Mid-Prairie boys basketball team took its show on the road on Thursday. The Golden Hawks traveled all the way from Wellman to Kansas City, Missouri.
The Golden Hawks took part in the “Twelve Courts of Christmas” shoot out in Kansas City, a day that featured high school, college and other organizational teams playing exhibitions against each other. Mid-Prairie took on Raytown South, out of Missouri and picked up a 50-43 victory.
Mid-Prairie didn’t get rattled by the long trip. The Golden Hawks jumped out to an early lead and held a 15-10 edge after one quarter and led 29-15 at halftime.
The over-borders win didn’t come without a little sweat though. Raytown South cut the lead to 11 points after three quarters and inched closer in the fourth, winning the last two periods 13-10 and 15-11 in the fourth.
Leading scorer Carter Harmsen didn’t let the change in scenery slow him down. He led the Golden Hawks once again with 15 points on the day. Alex Bean and Ethan Kos added nine points apiece.
Jackson Pennington scored seven points, pulled down seven rebounds and also finished the game with six steals for Mid-Prairie. Shawn Dodds scored six points, and Will Cavanaugh finished the day with four.
Mid-Prairie’s 7-0 record will be put to the test in the Golden Hawks’ first day back from break. They will host Wilton in a battle of River Valley South unbeatens on Jan. 4.
Ethan Kos scores in a Mid-Prairie game last season. On Thursday, Kos and the Golden Hawks traveled to Kansas City, where they knocked off Raytown South at the “Twelve Courts of Christmas” shootout. (file)
