WASHINGTON — The Demons made the Golden Hawks sweat a little when second-ranked (2A) Mid-Prairie baseball visited Washington on Wednesday night.
Washington had Mid-Prairie down three runs, but the Golden Hawks never wavered, scoring six runs in the middle innings and rallying for an 8-4 victory.
After the Golden Hawks plated one run in the top of the first and led for the next inning, Washington’s bats started to get hot right as the Mid-Prairie defense was making mistakes.
The Golden Hawks committed a couple of errors in the bottom of the second, and that set up the Demons for a four-run inning. Washington plated one run before loading the bases for Luke Beenblossom, who sent an RBI single into the outfield to make it 2-1. Isaac Vetter followed with a two-RBI single and the Demons led 4-1.
“It was the one inning we lost in this game, and we won the rest of them,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet. “If we clean those up, I think the score looks a lot different.”
Mid-Prairie battled back in its very next at-bat. Mid-Prairie loaded the bases with nobody out, and Collin Miller’s bunt down the first base line scored one run on a fielder’s choice, while putting two more in scoring position.
Camron Pickard followed Miller’s RBI with two more of his own on a single, and just like that, the score was tied 4-4.
Mid-Prairie would keep the heat on. The Golden Hawks scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, and tacked one on in the sixth.
“We've been putting the ball in play, and doing a good job with two strikes,” Mullet said. “And (getting) timely hitting. Two out hitting when we need to.”
Karson Grout led Mid-Prairie at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Dylan Henry was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Pickard finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs as well, to give the Golden Hawks three players with multiple RBIs.
Miller and Brock Harland each knocked in a run for Mid-Prairie. Brady Weber went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Bowen Burmeister returned from injury to start for Mid-Prairie, giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk. Landy Gingerich picked up the win in relief, going three innings and giving up no hits and no runs, while striking out two Demons. Gentry Bontrager threw two scoreless innings in relief.
Vetter went 1-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Washington. Noah Greiner was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Beenblossom was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Vetter threw five innings for the Demons, giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk, while striking out four Golden Hawks. James Strabala gave up an unearned run in one inning of relief, and Ethan Patterson struck out all three batters he faced.
Mid-Prairie moved to 23-6 with the win. Washington fell to 4-20.
