WELLMAN — No. 2 (2A) Mid-Prairie and Fairfield took time off their busy conference baseball schedules to meet up in Wellman on Tuesday night for a non-league clash.
It was the Golden Hawks who stayed hot, rushing out to an early lead and cruising to an 11-4 victory, their sixth in a row.
Mid-Prairie scored early and often. The Golden Hawks took advantage of some early Trojan misplays to scored three runs in the first inning, and two more in the third made it a 5-0 Golden Hawk advantage.
Fairfield loaded the bases with just one out in the fourth inning, but the Trojans brought just one runner in. Mid-Prairie’s Conner Wiles stepped in to relieve starter Landry Gingerich and got the Golden Hawks out of the jam.
“Our pitchers did an awesome job,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet. “Landry threw strikes, kept his pitch count down and put the baseball in play for our defense to make plays, and then Conner Wiles comes in and does the same kind of thing.”
The Golden Hawks quickly answered Fairfield’s run with one of their own. After one Trojan run in the sixth, Mid-Prairie hit back with five, to take an 11-2 advantage.
“We were nine for 11 in success rate, whether it was a ball put in play, a walk or a hit,” said Mullet. “Good things happen when you put the baseball in play.”
Fairfield filled the bases again in the seventh and got two back, but that was all the Trojans could muster.
After the game, Trojan head coach Josh Allison pointed to the slow start, and trouble in the field for his team.
“We have to expect that we're going to win, and it's almost like right now, we're in a funk where we expect to find a way to lose,” Allison said. “That's got to stop. We have way too much talent on this squad to keep doing that.”
Mid-Prairie’s Collin Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Joe Hall had one hit and two RBIs. Gingerich finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Both Brady Weber and Brock Harland had an RBI on the day, and Karson Grout finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Gingerich threw 3.2 innings and gave up just one earned run to earn the win. Along with he and Wiles, Dylan Henry also pitched for the Golden Hawks, coming in for the seventh.
Fairfield’s Cody Birlson went 2-for-3 in the loss. Tallon Bates was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Caden Allison knocked one runner in as well.
Isaac Harris took the loss on the mound, giving up five runs (two earned) over two innings. Nate Konczal threw 3.2 innings of relief, giving up four runs (one earned). Aiden Westercamp and Voss Richardson both threw as well.
Mid-Prairie is now 18-6 overall. The Golden Hawks will hit the road for an opportunity at a sweep of second-place West Liberty in a River Valley South showdown on Thursday night. Fairfield (9-16) plays a rubber match against Mt. Pleasant on Thursday at home.
