The Washington girls golf team won an 18-hole event Friday at Centerville.
Washington scored 351, Mount Pleasant 377 and Centerville 389.
Kiki Guo was consistent with nine-hole scores of 37-37 for an 18-hole total of 74, which earned her medalist honors. Demons teammate Josie Tanner was meet runner-up with 40-42-82. Anni Liechty of MP had an 86. Centerville's best score was 92.
'This was a new course for us to play and there was some drastic conditions,” WHS coach Len Kull said. 'We did have the lift, clean, and place rule in effect. The girls had not played for a week, but they really battled and were very consistent. A 176 on our first nine and a 175 for our second nine are very fine scores.”
The Demons got fine scores all the way around. Emily Waite shot 49-46-95. Macy Driscoll posted 50-50-100. Carly Burlingame carded 51-54-105. Emma Nichols had 56-52-108.
'Kiki had two birdies and two bogeys and it was her low score for 18 holes,” Kull said. 'Macy had a great round, shooting her lowest scores of the year. Josie did well. Emily was solid but had some bad holes. Carly was disappointed since she has been under 100, but with the conditions, she did fine. Emma's 52 was her low round of the year. It was the first time Macy has scored for us so she was very proud of her self with good reason.”
The Demons play at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club today.
Mid-Prairie takes 3rd
The Golden Hawks boys team took third at its home Invitational Friday with a 348. West Branch shot 320 to win.
Noah Schlabaugh led the Hawks carding a 40-39 for a 79, which was good for runner-up medalist, just two shots behind the leader. He played steady making nine pars and a birdie-3 on the par-4 18th hole to finish his round. Monte Slabaugh bounced back after a 46 with a great round of 41 to finish with an 87 to earn 10th individually. Dominic McCain played an outstanding front nine with four pars and a birdie-3 on the par-4 9th to shot 40. He found some trouble on the back to finish with a 48, shooting an 88 on the day and finishing 14th individually. Ryan Smit and Kayden Reinier both shot 94 to round out the scoring.
'It was good to get this in with the weather we had early in the week,” Hawks coach Kelby Bender said. 'This is always a good tune-up for conference Tuesday and sectionals Friday. I thought we played well. We were in a three-way tie for second after the front nine.”
IMS' Leyden is runner-up
The Iowa Mennonite boys golf team did not have a team score but Trevor Leyden finished in a tie for the best score Saturday at the Central Lee Invitational.
Leyden shot 40-39 for a 79 but lost to Van Buren's Clayton Bruckman on a playoff hole.
Other IMS scores were Landon Schrock 43-47-90 and Noah Miller 51-47-98.
