ELDRIDGE - Mid-Prairie's girls wrestling team and the junior varsity boys went to North Scott Saturday to compete in tournaments.
Bronwyn Brenneman, Caitlyn Busch, Mia Garvey and Sarah Meader won girls individual championships for the Golden Hawks. Terry Bordenave and Dominic McCain won titles while Malachi Sexton, Owen Trimpe and Jarron Thomas made it to the title match, but finished second in the junior varsity boys tournament.
Busch and Garvey each won their class title for the first time this season.
'It was a great day of wrestling all day,” Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey said. 'Our defense was awesome all day long.”
The girls team was 16-8 on the day by Garvey's calculations, which would have been enough points to win the tournament if officials were keeping track and team scores had been tabulated officially.
Brittney Pfeifer finished in second, Madison Kelly took third and Emil Harmston was fourth for the Golden Hawks.
'My overall take-away was that we need to open up in the neutral position,” Coach Garvey said. 'Be more confident in our offensive leg attacks. Our girls all looked very good in the top position.”
Meader continued her winning ways, dominant once again in every match she wrestled, scoring three pins. 'I want to see her have more confidence in her shots and open up sooner in the match,” Coach Garvey said.
Mia Garvey captured her first title by going 3-0, pinning all opponents, two which are currently ranked by IAwrestle. 'Mia's TD defense is very good and she did a great job controlling her opponents in the top position,” Coach Garvey said. 'She is showing more poise with every match she wrestles.”
Busch's first individual championship was also equally stellar as she won all 3 matches by fall. In the first match of the day, she found herself in a 8-1 deficit going into the third period, Her opponent chose bottom and Busch went to work.
'Caitlyn is learning that the aggressor in the match has the upper hand,” Coach Garvey said. 'She stayed calm and used a relentless power half attack that ended up winning her (that first) match. I believe she was able to wear her opponent out due to her awesome work ethic in practice.”
Brenneman is the Golden Hawks best offensively when on her feet. She scored the first takedown in all of her matches. 'She is really fun to watch and she wrestles with no fear,” Coach Garvey said. 'I was most impressed with her double leg takedowns, she fired right in and scored every time that she took a shot.”
Pfeiffer is showing a lot of improvement and beginning to get over a certain amount of the timidness that happens with first-year wrestlers. 'She has a toughness inside her that she is beginning to find,” Coach Garvey said. 'All of the team wrestled really well and are making huge gains every week.”
Mid-Prairie will be heading to Anamosa tonight and then to Highland Friday in an effort to get as many matches as possible before the state tournament.
Garvey said the Mid-Prairie boys did well also but did not see many of those matches since he was in the gym with the girls most of the day.
'We are really trying to rotate coaches around to all levels, so that the kids get to have each of us in their corner,” Coach Garvey said.
