Great weekend for Demon softball
Washington holds off Fort Madison in SEC play, wins 2 over weekend

FORT MADISON — The now eighth-ranked (3A) Washington softball team has won seven-straight games following a perfect weekend on the diamond.
The Demons polished of the regular season sweep of Fort Madison on Thursday night, holding off the Bloodhounds for a 6-4 Southeast Conference win. Washington then followed that with four more wins at the Jesup tournament over Friday and Saturday.
Washington jumped out to a 6-0 advantage against Fort Madison on Thursday. The Demons put up two runs in the first inning and four in the second, but had to cling on for the rest of the contest.
Fort Madison cut the lead to 6-2 with a two-run third inning, and then plated one in the fifth and the sixth to creep closer.
Bella Salazar struck out seven Bloodhounds, and gave up just four runs (one earned) over a seven-inning complete game to earn the win in the circle.
Ella Greiner went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the win. Leighton Salazar went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Bella Salazar knocked in one run, and Kendall Hinrichsen finished with two hits.
Washington knocked off West Delaware 16-7 on Friday afternoon to kick off the Jesup tournament. The Demons received a 3-for-4 performance crom Alyvia Anderson, who finished with one double and four RBIs. Bella Salazar was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Halle Cuddeback knocked in two.
Later that day, Washington knocked off Edgewood-Colesburg 10-0. Anderson had another huge game, going 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs. Leighton Salazar went 4-for-4, and Bella Salazar threw a two-hit shut out.
The Demons racked up the runs against Wapsie Valley on Saturday, finishing the game in five innings.
Bella Salazar dealt another two-hit shut out in that win, striking out four batters along the way. Leighton Salazar led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
The Demons faced off with Jesup in the tournament championship on Saturday evening, and a back-and-forth game went Washington’s way.
Anderson continued her ridiculous weekend at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Bella Salazar and Greiner each knocked in one, and Cuddeback earned the win in the circle, giving up three earned runs over seven innings.
Heading into Monday night’s Southeast Conference slate, the Demons hold a 14-3 overall record. Washington is 6-0 in conference play, tied with Burlington for first place.
