Their shutout streak came to an end, but the Mid-Prairie football team may have added a brand-new wrinkle to their offense last Friday night.
The Class 2A Hawks (5-0, 2-0 in district play) cruised to a 49-26 non-district victory over Class 1A Sigourney-Keota (2-3, 1-1 in district play), ending the Mid-Prairie defense?s shutout streak at two games.
Senior quarterback Ryan Cortum had the best game of his season, completing nine of his 11 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns, including an 85-yarder to junior Levi Duwa.
Duwa eclipsed 100 yards receiving on the night with four catches for 105 yards and two scores, while senior Blake Schwartz caught four balls for 108 yards and a touchdown.
Junior running back Ricky Vargas turned his only reception into a 56-yard touchdown, and made a big impact in the ground game, running for 120 yards and a pair of scores. Senior Nolan Faselt had 52 yards rushing and a touchdown in the contest.
Defensively, the Hawks were led by senior linebacker Cameron Tolander?s nine tackles and a sack, while sophomore Keaton Duwa recorded seven tackles in the contest. Faselt forced the only turnover on the night, recording an interception.
For the Cobras, sophomore quarterback Luke Greiner had 108 yards passing on five completions, recording a touchdown and an interception in the game, while junior Jacob Wickencamp rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Senior running back Peyton Crawford was held to 41 yards rushing on the night, but he caught two passes for 63 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown pass.
Defensively, the team was led by junior Noah Boender?s 5.5 tackles (one for a loss) while Alec Schuster recorded five tackles. Seniors Isaiah Hahn and Zeb Webb combined for the lone Cobra sack of the night.
Mid-Prairie, now ranked No. 6 in the state, will host No. 7 Williamsburg on Friday night, while Sigourney-Keota will take on Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at home.
Columbus falls in short week
WEST MARSHALL ? After playing nearly a full game on Monday night, a slow start hurt Columbus on Friday night as they fell to West Marshall 34-20.
The Wildcats fell behind 20-0 early in the second quarter, but despite a late rally to bring Columbus within eight points, they fell in the contest, moving them to 2-3 (1-1 in district play).
The Wildcats were led by senior running back Mauricio Ramirez, who had 120 yards rushing and a touchdown on the night.
Junior Ruben Paz recorded four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown on the night, while junior quarterback Carter Colby completed eight of his 17 attempts for 156 yards and two scores.
John Rees led the team defensively with eight tackles and two tackles for a loss, while Nick Hernandez had six tackles in the game (two for a loss).
Paz also nabbed an interception for the Wildcats in the contest.
Columbus will have a tough test on Friday night when Class 1A No. 1 ranked Regina comes to town.
WACO wins third straight
WAYLAND ? The WACO football team claimed its third straight victory with a 47-14 victory over Cardinal on Friday night, moving to 3-2 (3-0 in district play) on the year.
Senior running back Bryce Achen ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns in the game, while junior Gabe Black had 69 yards rushing and two scores to his credit.
Achen added a receiving touchdown to his night, catching a 19-yard score from junior Jackson Roth.
Jackson Gerot had three catches for 59 yards to lead the Warriors.
Defensively, Gerot had five tackles with one sack to lead the Warriors, while the Warriors ended up forcing six turnovers in the game.
Achen, Jorge Chacon, Justyn Chalup and Colton Horak each nabbed an interception, while Chalupa and Colton Wilson recovered fumbles for the Warriors.
WACO will travel to Lone Tree on Friday night.
