Mid-Prairie falls in second-straight week
WELLMAN - A last-chance effort fell short for the Mid-Prairie football team on Friday night, as they fell to district foe Central Lee 14-7 at home.
The Hawks had the ball at their own 24-yard line with 1:20 left in the game, and drove to their own 47 with 16 seconds left, but a fumble on the next play ended the comeback effort for Mid-Prairie as they dropped their second-straight game.
The loss moves Mid-Prairie to 5-2 on the season (2-2 in district play) after falling to Williamsburg last week. Mid-Prairie has only picked up seven total points in the past two games, both at home.
Mid-Prairie senior quarterback Ryan Cortum completed 12 of his 25 pass attempts for 155 yards with two interceptions and a 70-yard touchdown to senior Paul Hawbaker.
As a team, the Hawks only managed 54 yards rushing, at an average of 2.16 yards per carry. Junior Ricky Vargas had a team-high 25 yards rushing while senior Nolan Faselt had 24 yards on the ground.
Hawbaker finished with a team-high 72 yards receiving, while senior Blake Schwartz caught four passes for 44 yards and junior Levi Duwa caught four passes for 32 yards.
Duwa had 7.5 tackles (two for a loss) and a fumble recovery to lead the Hawks in the game, while senior Karson Duwa had seven tackles.
Mid-Prairie will look to avoid a third straight loss when the Hawks hit the road to face West Liberty (6-1) on Friday night.
Sigourney-Keota downs Highland
RIVERSIDE ? The Sigourney-Keota football team spoiled the 50th homecoming celebration for the Highland Huskies, as the Cobras cruised to a 54-20 victory on Friday night.
Led by senior running back Peyton Crawford (22 rushes, 210 yards, four touchdowns), the Cobras never left the game in doubt. Sophomore quarterback Luke Greiner emerged for the Cobras, rushing 11 times for 108 yards and two scores, including a 29-yard touchdown run.
Jacob Wickencamp picked up a touchdown for the Cobras, adding eight carries for 91 yards on the night, while freshman Carson Crawford had 11 rushes in the game, picking up 74 yards and a touchdown
Peyton Crawford added 2.5 tackles and an interception on the night, while junior Avery Moore had a team-high seven tackles to go with an interception.
Sigourney-Keota (4-3, 3-1 in district play) will take on Columbus at home on Friday night.
Highland?s night was led by junior quarterback Jake Wood, who completed 17-of-28 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns.
Two of those touchdown throws went to Bill Burton, who picked up three receptions for 50 yards.
Trent Lasek had six catches for 68 yards and a score, while Chase Rath had five receptions for 56 yards.
Pella Christian cruises past Columbus
COLUMBUS JUNCTION ? Senior running back Mauricio Ramirez eclipsed 100-yards rushing on Friday night, but the Columbus Wildcats couldn?t pick up the home win against Pella Christian on Friday.
The Wildcats fell to the district opponent 56-18 on the night, as they fell to 2-5 (1-3 in district play) on the year.
Ramirez finished the night with 108 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while catching three passes for 59 yards and another score. Senior Alex Benitez had the other Wildcat score on the night, picking up 14 yards on three carries.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by sophomore Nick Hernandez who had 6.5 tackles (one for a loss), while sophomore Abel Mena had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery on the day.
Columbus will take on Sigourney-Keota on the road next week.
