WASHINGTON - Demon fans planning on going to Solon for Friday's football game should be sure they will be allowed to attend. Although the fall sports season has commenced for high schools, there have been restrictions issued to insure games continue.
Washington High School athletic director Brent Van Weelden alerted Demon fans to the guidelines issued by schools where Washington will participate this week.
Thursday the cross-country teams run at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa. Spectators are asked to wear face coverings. Thursday also has the volleyball team starting Southeast Conference play when it travels to play the Panthers. The Mt. Pleasant Community School District is recommending that spectators wear face coverings. Saturday the Demon volleyball team plays at Anamosa. All spectators must wear a mask if attending.
Friday features a football game that has been check-marked on some Washington players' calendars since schedules were released in March. Washington plays at Solon.
Solon is allowing Washington to bring 500 spectators to the game. Each Washington player, coach, cheerleader, and manager will be given five vouchers to use at the north ticket booth at Spartan Stadium. The voucher will allow the person to purchase a ticket to the game for $5.
Solon, which dropped from Class 3A to the largest enrollment school in 2A, has already lost a game this year, falling to Williamsburg last week 17-14. Solon also limited fans at that home game.
Two Iowa City schools (City High, Liberty) did not allow spectators at football games Friday. The state reported a record-high 338 positive COVID cases in Johnson County Thursday, with a positivity rate of 47.6 percent. Its weekly average for positive cases is 115.
