West Liberty?s girls? soccer team was nearly late showing up to their game on Monday at the Mid-Prairie soccer complex, but decided to make their time worthwhile.
The Comets? bus arrived right at the original scheduled start time of 4:30, forcing the game to start 30 minutes late, but they ended up knocking off the Hawks 2-1 in overtime.
The Hawks struck first in the contest, with Ireland Hostetler?s late first-half shot bouncing off a West Liberty defender, and right to Addie Rath?s foot. Rath finished the shot, and put Mid-Prairie up 1-0 in the 35th minute.
After halftime, the Comets added more pressure to the Hawks, and eventually broke through with a goal in the 74th minute to equalize.
Mid-Praire added more pressure in the final minutes, but couldn?t capitalize on a few opportunities, forcing the game into overtime.
West Liberty controlled much of overtime, and finally broke through five minutes in, putting in a goal for the victory.
Mid-Prairie falls to 4-3 after the loss, but they are focused on how to continue improving.
?We can?t give up,? Kaalberg said. ?At the end we lost momentum and lost the energy to play, but overall I still don?t think we played too bad. We are going to work on pace. We need to run at every drill. It felt like we weren?t in shape enough to keep up with them.?
Mid-Prairie will take on Cedar Valley Christian on Thursday night.
