The Mid-Prairie cross-country team faced off with some of the state?s best runners on Saturday morning, and showed that they belong in the conversation at the top.
The Golden Hawks ran at perennial state meet favorite Monticello over the weekend and came away with a pair of second-place finishes, barely missing out on a boys? team win.
On the girls? side of the meet, Mid-Prairie scored 85 points to take second place, finishing behind only top-ranked Monticello.
Anna Hostetler ran a 20:25 for sixth place in the meet, followed by Maddi Zahradnek?s 22:00 for 18th place.
Abby Tornow came up just behind Zahradnek with a 22:04 for 19th place, with Greta Schmidt taking 20th with a 22:05. Hanna Van Roekel took 22nd with a 22:18 to round out the scoring for the Golden Hawks.
Kessa Jones finished in 23rd place with a 22:22, while Shelby Zahradnek finished in 44th with a 23:59.
Mid-Prairie edged out third-place Western Dubuque, who finished the meet with 87 points.
On the boys? side, Mid-Prairie needed a tiebreaker to decide the result between them and the third-ranked Monticello program (who has won three state meet titles in the past four years).
The Hawks weren?t able to get the edge with the sixth runner, and came away with a second-place finish with 40 points.
The team was led by Luke Sigler, who took fifth place at the meet, running a 17:35. Floyd Evans finished in sixth place with a 17:42 and Ryan Errthum took seventh with a 17:43.
Peyton Miller finished in ninth place with a 17:48 at the meet, followed by Andrew Schwartz?s 13th-place finish (18:01) to round out the scoring.
Ben Sigler took 26th with an 18:58 while Ben Stone finished in 27th place with an 18:59 to round out the varsity runners.
Mid-Prairie will be off until Saturday, when they host a meet at the Wellman Golf Course. The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
