Heartbreak for Highland, Cardinal softball
Huskies, Comets end season in 1A/2A regional semifinal

Friday night was a heartbreaking one for both Cardinal and Highland softball.
The two squads had hopes and expectations of making a run to this years state tournament.
Cardinal, who’s ranked No. 4 in Class 2A was defeated by in conference rival No. 13 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 4-0. Meanwhile, Highland suffered a heart-rending 2-1 loss to No. 6 Sigourney.
For Cardinal, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont took advantage of third times the charm.
Coming into the matchup, Cardinal had defeated EBF twice, 2-1 and 4-3, but the Rockets had the last laugh.
The Rockets took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and the Comets had no answer.
Cardinal held the Rockets scoreless through the next three innings, but failed to make up the disadvantage.
EBF scored a run in the fifth and sixth to close out the win.
Cardinal ends its season at 27-8.
As for Highland, the Huskies found themselves down 1-0 for the majority of their matchup with Sigourney.
The Huskies finally broke the seal in the sixth as Mackenzie Davis tallied an RBI to knot the game at 1-1.
A half inning later, Sigourney got the run they needed off an RBI groundout.
Adisyn Prottsman finished with two hits for Highland. Payton Brun, Lily Barre, Mackenzie Davis and Madison Beeson all had one hit.
Highland ends its season at 19-9.
