New London volleyball coach Maureen Heath joined an exclusive club on Saturday. Heath picked up her 900th win as a head coach, which makes her just the third volleyball coach to reach that feat in IGHSAU history.
The Tigers actually won four games in the tournament, defeating Louisa-Muscatine, English Valleys, Winfield-Mt. Union and West Burlington, and falling to Van Buren.
The Tigers beat L&M 21-8 and 21-9, getting six kills from Kaylor Schulte in the win. The Tigers also blew out English Valleys, winning 21-7 and 21-10 behind a nine-kill game from Addie Pry.
The other two wins weren't so easy. The Tigers battled to a 25-17, 26-24 win over West Burlington, getting eight kills from Pry in the match, as well as three aces from Alexa Wenger.
The Tigers had to battle back from a 21-12 opening set loss against W-MU. New London was able to take game two 21-17 and game three 15-9 to pull out the win. Schulte hit 10 kills in that game, and Kristen Rohdy had 22 assists.
W-MU was led by Jenna Buffington's eight kills, three aces and 21 digs in the loss. Kayla Edwards had nine assists.
The Tigers traded punches with Van Buren for three sets. After dropping the first set 26-24, New London forced a deciding third with a 25-18 win in set two. Van Buren pulled it out in the third, however, winning 16-14. Pry had 13 kills in the loss and Chloe Coleman finished with 47 digs. It was Van Buren's only non-sweep of the year.
Heath added to her record just three days later with a four-set victory over WACO.
