Highland advances behind Burton

BURLINGTON - Highland High School senior Dan Burton threw a complete game to defeat Cardinal, 8-4, in a Class 1A District 8 baseball quarterfinal Saturday.

Highland jumped on top with a four-run inning in the second frame, then added three more in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Cardinal scored its first run in the fourth and tried to mount a comeback with three runs in the seventh inning, but Burton would't allow it.

Highland piled up 10 hits in the game with Bill Laughlin, Trey Lasek and Brady Hahn connecting for two hits apiece. Jacob Leonard added a home run. Jordan Sosa, Burton and Brody Burton each had a hit.

Highland (13-10) advances to play IMS (12-7), an 8-3 winner over New London, at Burlington Notre Dame Tuesday.

Southeast iowa Super Conference North Division rivals IMS and the Huskies split their games this season, with each winning on the other's field.
