HIGHLAND — It wasn’t a walk in the park for the favored Highland baseball team on Monday night, but the Huskies still got it done, beating Winfield-Mount Union 12-2 in five to earn a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division victory.
Highland’s bats started out hot. The Huskies scored three runs in the first inning and one in the second. In the third, Winfield-Mount Union plated two and held the Huskies scoreless, making it a game going into the fourth frame.
“We finally sat back and hit the ball,” said Highland head coach Seth Milledge. “We weren’t making a lot of good swings on the ball and kept hitting it to their shortstop.”
After holding the Wolves scoreless in the fourth, the Huskies busted out the bats for eight runs over the fourth and fifth innings, capped by a three RBI double from Kaige Vonnahme, which ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
“I just put the ball in play to see what happens,” said Vonnahme. “I really think I’ve done that all year.”
Vonnahme ended his day 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Bryce Thompson went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Trevor McFarland was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Chase Shultz, Logan Bonebrake and Luke Miller all knocked in one.
Connor Grinstead picked up the win for Highland, giving up two runs (one earned) over four innings of work. WMU starter Luke Pfeiffer gave up seven runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk to get tagged with the loss.
WMU had five hits in the game. Andrew Brown and Nick Crow each had one hit and one RBI to lead the team.
Winfield-Mount Union head coach Mark Griffin said he was happy his team stayed in the game early, but says he wished his team took more of an advantage on the slow Highland start.
“Some days the good days aren’t going to play as good as they normally do,” Griffin said. “We’re an improving team, and today was a game that we could have won.“
Highland moved to 12-7 overall and 10-3 in the North Division with the win. Winfield-Mount Union fell to 2-18 overall and 2-17 in conference play.
