RIVERSIDE ? The Highland Huskies lost at home Monday, June 12, to the Pekin Panthers by a final score of 6-10.
Pekin put up seven runs in the first inning, making it harder for Highland to catch up.
The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the first, with Jake Wood scoring on a Chase Rath pop to center field and Bill Burton would score after Rath would get out attempting to steal second base.
Jarad Schnoebelen scored from second base when a Trey Lasek fly to left field was dropped by Pekin, putting the score at 3-7.
Pekin added another run to the board in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to take a 3-10 lead.
Highland?s last three runs scored in the bottom of the seventh when Robert Yoder scored on a wild pitch while Lasek scored on a sacrifice hit by Burton and Wood crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Coach Seth Milledge says the boys need to work on one thing: get back to the fundamentals.
?We have to hit the ball as well as field the baseball,? he says. ?In the first inning, we let things hang.
?We didn?t care of the little things and keep it simple. That came back to bit us pretty good.?
Despite the loss, there were positives from the game.
?We never quit,? Milledge says. ?We lost the game but came back in the last inning, making it a four-run game late.
?We ended up chasing the [Pekin] starter out of the game and put a couple runs up on their reliever.?
The boys take to the field at New London with a 10-3 record. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
