SULLY — The Highland football team took a trip Friday for a first-round playoff game against Lynnville-Sully. The 100-mile ride home was not the best of times after a 40-15 loss to the Hawks.
Highland’s 2021 season ends with a 3-6 record. Lynnville-Sully moves on with an 8-1 mark.
Highland clinched the berth in the playoffs with a win over Pekin on Oct. 15. Trevor McFarland ran once and caught an 80-yard pass that went for a touchdown and Logan Bonebrake caught the only other completion of Connor Grinstead for 38 yards. Grinstead ran 13 times in the game for 102 yards and three touchdowns. Brenton Bonebrake had 176 yards on 11 carries, with two touchdowns.
Grinstead was second in District 5 with 23 rushing touchdowns and 11 passing was also second.
Logan Bonebrake sparked the Huskies on defense with a fumble recovery while Jaden Schmid made 7.0 tackles. Carson Netser had 7.0 tackles, six solo. Grinstead had 8.5 stops on defense.
Pekin's Cael Baker (12) and Cole Earnest (13) tackle Highland quarterback Connor Grinstead in last season's home game when Pekin lost on a last-second touchdown. Pekin lost this season and Highland made the playoffs but lost Friday to Lynnville-Sully. (Kevin Rohr/Courtesy)
