MARSHALLTOWN — American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown played host to the best Class 1A golfers in Iowa, including seven from the Union coverage area.
Six varsity golfers from Highland took on the two-day tournament, and brought home a trophy to show for it, finishing fourth place with a final stroke total of 736.
The Huskies narrowly beat out Akron-Westfield, shooting three strokes better to take fourth. Newman Catholic did edge out Highland with a 729 for third. Nashua-Plainfield shot 719 for second, and Easton Valley pulled out a second-straight title with a dominant score of 690.
The Huskies were led by Emersyn Schultz, who played phenomenally on Day 1, shooting a 77 to share the lead with two other competitors, before finishing her tournament out in sixth place, with a 166.
“It was super fun,” said Schultz. “We definitely didn’t meet our goal, but we showed that we put in the time.”
Schultz was one of two Highland players to crack the Top-15. Fellow junior Adisyn Prottsman shot a 175 to take 15th place overall.
“It’s a lot different (playing at state),” Prottsman said. “It’s fun just having all the people cheering you on., though.”
Lone senior Adeline Krotz finished 41st overall. She shot a 192 to end her high school golf career.
“Growing up through Highland golf, we always had either one or two seniors or not many,” Krotz said. “I knew I had to fulfill that role of guiding them, and having fun and making sure everyone was included.”
Joslyn Prottsman finished the tournament with a 203. Autumn Guseman shot a 227, and Cassidy Duster ended at 253.
New London’s Emma Busby says making the state tournament her senior year was the goal, and that’s exactly what she did. She secured a Top-25 finish in her final time at American Legion, shooting 180.
Busby improved her tournament on the second day. She had shot a 93 on Day 1, but finished out with an 87 on Day 2.
“I was definitely nervous, but that was my goal from the beginning of the season,” Busby said. “That really blew me out of the water.”
The end of the Class 1A tournament marked the final day of golf this spring for the Union coverage area.
