Highland girls split games in home tournament

HIGHLAND - The Highland girls basketball played two games this weekend as part of their season-opening Four Corners Shootout. The Huskies rolled past Keota 80-21 on Friday night, and fell to Lone Tree 55-40 on Saturday.
The Huskies shut Keota down from the opening tip on Friday. The Huskies led 19-3 after one quarter and 44-10 at halftime. Highland scored 18 points in both the third and fourth quarters to outscore the Eagles 36-11 in the second half.
A couple of freshmen led the Huskies in scoring against Keota. Dani Laughlin dropped 17 points, including three makes from three-point land, and also co-led the squad with five steals. Abbi Stransky had 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.
Alyssa Brase was the only starter to reach double digits, scoring 10 points. Jenna Sands and Alyssa Clark each had eight points. Mackinze Hora and Haley Sweeting scored seven apiece. Emma Soukup had four. Kayla Cerny scored three, and Dakota Longbine had two.
Highland played Lone Tree in the tournament championship after the Lions knocked off Iowa Valley on Friday night. Lone Tree was able to win every quarter to slowly pull away with the 15-point win.
The Lions led 10-9 after one quarter, 29-23 at halftime and 41-30 after three.
Brase scored 11 points to lead the Huskies. Sweeting had eight. Cerny scored six. Stransky scored five. Laughlin and Sands had four apiece, and Clarke and Hora each scored one.
Highland, now 1-1 on the season, has the opportunity at revenge on Tuesday, Nov. 26. They'll travel to Lone Tree for their first SEISC North Division league game of the season.
