While WACO had a bye Friday, other area teams split in their contests. Sigourney-Keota was the only team to have a home game.
Highland 46, Cardinal 0
ELDON -- The Huskies romped to the Class A District 6 win behind Brady Hahn, who rolled up 145 yards rushing on just 11 attempts, an average of 13.2 yards per carry.
Jordan Sosa scored two touchdowns for Highland and gained 67 yards on six carries. Mason McFarland caught four passes for 81 yards and a score. Trey Lasek completed 6 of 11 for 116 yards and ran 17 times for 114 yards.
On defense, Cale Yeggy had an interception return for a TD and Huskies teammate Brody Burton made four tackles, including two for loss.
'We played really sound in all phases of the game,” Highland coach Scott Morel said. 'The line really blocked well. The turning point in the game came when we stopped them after a long play and they did not score.”
Highland is 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the district. Cardinal is 4-4, 0-4.
Mid-Prairie 33, Davis County 6
BLOOMFIELD -- The Golden Hawks flew out to an early lead in this Class 2A District 6 matchup and were never headed.
'We had a great first drive of the game which set the tone for the night,” MP coach Pete Cavanaugh said. 'Our offensive and defensive lines played well all night.”
Rex Peck scored on a 1-yard run, Justin Schwartz scored on an 18-yard run and Grant Boyse scampered into the end zone from 54 yards out -- all in the first quarter. Boyse added another score in the second quarter, running in from the 13. He finished with 119 yards on 13 carries. Schwartz ran for 133 yards on 20 carries and his TD from the 8 made the score 33-0 with under 5 minutes left in the third quarter.
MP quarterback Brad Tornow was 9 of 13 passing for 120 yards. Jack Baker caught four passes for 47 yards.
'Our guys finally played a complete game,” Cavanaugh said. 'We did a great job on defense, really contained their quarterback.”
Josh Wallington had four solo tackles and five assisted for MP. Connor Miller, David Murray and Chaz Peterson each had a sack.
Mid-Prairie is 2-2 in the district and 2-6 overall. Davis Countty is 2-6, 0-4.
No. 7 Wilton 34, Columbus 8
WILTON -- There was 'Not much to brag about on offense,” in this Class 1A District 5 game, according to Columbus coach Scott Symmonds. 'Our defense played well, led by seniors Jose Cerezo and Chance Colby.”
Cerezo made 11 solo stops and a sack. Colby had 9 total tackles, including a sack. Sophomores Tucker Bright had 11.5 total tackles and Will Scwab had 14.5.
'Our young kids, especially our sophomores are being asked to carry a lot of responsibility,” Symmonds said. 'They have answered the challenge, as statistics show that the trio of Schwab, Bright, and (Mason) Hodges accounted for half of our defensive stops. The Miranda brothers (Jorge and Bryan) played well, accounting for 11 tackles, six assists, and four tackles for loss. '
Colby ran for 64 yards and a TD while Cerezo had 42 yards.
Columbus is 0-4, 0-8. Wilton is 7-1, 4-0.
Wapello 24, Sigourney-Keota 14
SIGOURNEY -- The home team tied the Class 1A District 5 game at 7-7 at the beginning of the second quarter 'but giving up two TDs put us in the position where we had to play catchup,” SK coach Jared Jensen said. 'That was the turning point in the game. We played better on defense in the second half, only giving up three points, but Wapello's defense held our offense to only seven points.”
Cecil Sypherd recovered a fumble to score the tying TD for the Cobras. JD Stout scored on a 55-yard rushing TD and finished with 156 yards on 23 carries for the Cobras.
'We played a hungry Wapello squad that played a pretty good game on both sides of the ball,” Jensen said. 'They just made the plays we did not make and got the stops that we could not. We would have some momentum on offense, then have a mishap or a mental breakdown and have to play from behind the chains. On defense we had a tough time bringing down (Ricky) Pforts. We had some penalties and some crucial missed tackles in some inopportune times which cost us some third-down stops.”
Pforts ran for 215 yards on 26 carries for Wapello.
'I don't think we played our best game of the season by any means, but we went out and competed,” Jensen said. 'I wouldn't say we completely lost the game. I would say Wapello won it. They made the plays that they needed to make to win the game and we did not.”
SK is 5-3, 2-2. Wapello is 4-4, 2-2.
