RIVERSIDE — Highland and Winfield-Mt. Union went toe-to-toe on Tuesday night in a SEISC North showdown.
The Huskies (17-11) and Wolves (10-10) gave fans a great show, but it was the former taking the three set win, 25-22, 28-26 and 26-24.
As the score suggest, it was anyone’s game by the end of each of the three sets.
None of the three started that way though.
In set one, Highland looked as if they were going to take it handily after holding leads of 16-12 and 19-15 late; however, WMU had other ideas.
A pair of kills, one from Quin Smith and the other from Kaelyn Townsley, followed by two Huskies errors brought the game even at 19-19.
To the Wolves’ displeasure, they could never gain the lead.
WMU had it at one, 23-22, after a kill from Josie Nelson, but Highland scored the final two point to close out the first set.
The second set of the evening was similar.
This time, Highland raced out to a 9-2. WMU once again fought back.
The Wolves got it down to three at 13-10 off a kill from Smith, but the Huskies answered back.
Highland rattled off a 5-1 run that ended with a kill from Adeline Krotz to make it 18-11.
The Wolves were determined.
WMU followed with its biggest run of the night, 10-3, to once again tie the game at 21-21.
A kill from the Huskies Brena Hazelett gave Highland a two point advantage at 24-22, but back-to-back WMU points once again knotted it up.
Smith once again delivered a kill this time giving the Wolves their first lead of the set.
But it was Highland who would have the last laugh. The Huskies and Wolves tied twice more at 25-25 and 26-26 before a kill from Krotz and an ace from Katie Herrig sealed it.
Set three was the other way around.
This time WMU was red-hot from the start. The Wolves jumped out to what looked like a commanding 10-3 lead.
Highland slowly chipped away before making its move at the last possible moment.
With WMU leading 23-18, Herrig started serving. By the time she was done, the Huskies held onto a 24-23 lead.
The two tied once more at 24-24, but a block and another point finished off the match.
Highland was led by Brena Hazelett and Adeline Krotz with eight kills each.
Laney Skelton had 24 assists. Lilly Barre finished with 20 digs and Hailey Brun 14. Herrig ended with three aces as well.
For WMU, Kellee Milks had nine kills and Josie Nelson eight.
Madisen Kellogg dished out 25 assists. Pacey Schlee ended with 26 digs. Kellee Milks finished with three aces.
