Highland, New London heading to state golf
Huskies heading to state for first time ever, Tigers continue rich history of state berths
MORAVIA — Highland and New London girls golf showed why their two of the best teams in the area on Wednesday as both the Huskies and Tigers punched their ticket to state with top two finishes in the Class 1A Region 5 Final at Moravia’s Preserve Golf Club at Honey Creek Resort.
For Highland, it’s a historical feat. The Huskies will be competing at state for the first time ever. Meanwhile, New London will be looking to reach the top of the mountain after coming up just short at state a year ago.
In the Regional Final, it was Highland who took the title with a 350. New London followed with a second overall finish, carding 363, 13 shots behind the Huskies.
The Tigers finished with the meets two highest individual finishers in Taylor Phillips and Sophie Malott. Phillips was the regional medalist with a 77. Malott was the runner-up with a 79.
Leading Highland was Adisyn Prottsman with a new career best 80, good enough for third overall. Kelsi Cerny is back at state for the second straight season. Cerny finished fourth with an 84.
Emersyn Schultz took sixth with an 89. Danika Kraus also notched a top 10 finish with a 97.
Also for New London, Emma Busby earned a top 10 finish, placing eighth with a 94. Katelyn Allen shot a 113. Sidney Kracht had 118 and Stevey Wintermeyer had a 124.
Both New London and Highland will head to American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown for the Class 1A State Championships. That tournament will take place on Thursday and Friday.
