Highland, Pekin lead North baseball teams
SEISC teams balanced, but Huskies edge the field
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference has released its choices for the All-Conference teams last week. Highland and Pekin led a big list of area athletes who made the cut.
The Huskies and Panthers both had four players named to the first team. Highland edged Pekin out with eight names overall to the Panthers’ seven.
Rick Whitaker of Mediapolis was Coach of the Year as the North Division champion and Bulldog Jaxon Brooks along with Chase Schultz of Highland shared the Player of the Year honor.
Schultz earned his Player of the Year nod after an excellent year on the bump and at the plate.
On the pitcher’s mound, the junior won at an 80 percent flip, going 8-2 with a 1.15 ERA and 74 strikeouts. When a bat was in his hands, he hit .343 with 15 RBIs.
Joining Schulz on the first team from Highland were teammates Trevor McFarland, Luke Miller and Logan Bonebrake
McFarland, an junior, was chosen as a catcher. He hit .303 this season with five triples, one double and 23 RBIs.
Miller, another junior earned his nod as an infielder. He was one of two Huskies with a team-leading .356 batting average, hit six doubles and two home runs, and knocked in 21 runs.
Bonebrake earned his spot as an outfielder. The sophomore hit .324 with three doubles, two homers and 22 RBIs.
Pekin’s first-team foursome was Chase Stansberry, Brady Latcham, Brady Millikin and Cael Baker.
Stansberry had an enormous year at the plate, hitting .452 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 34 RBIs in his junior season, but he was chosen as a pitcher after going 3-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 73 strikeouts.
Baker was chosen as an infielder. The senior hit .364 this season with six doubles and 14 RBIs.
Millikin got the nod as an outfielder. In his senior year, he hit .338 with seven doubles and 13 RBIs.
Latcham earned his spot as a utility player. Along with hitting .357 with eight doubles, two home runs and 35 RBIs, the senior got it done on the mound with a 4-2 record, a 2.56 ERA and 45 strikeouts.
Hillcrest Academy had three names on the first team. London Schrock, Eli Ours and Luke Schrock all represented the Ravens.
London Schrock was chosen as a catcher. The senior hit .405 with eight doubles, three homers and three triples for the Ravens.
Eli Ours made the team as an infielder. He hit .322 with one double, two triples and 18 RBIs in his senior year.
Luke Schrock earned his spot on the squad as a utility player. As just a sophomore, he led the Ravens with a .407 batting average and ended the 2021 campaign with five doubles, two triples and two home runs.
Highland had two second-teamers, pitcher Connor Grinstead and utility player Kaige Vonnahme. Hillcrest added two with infielder Jace Rempel and outfielder Noah Miller. Pekin catcher Mason Juhl earned second team honors, as did Winfield-Mount Union infielder Nick Crow.
All teams were given two honorable mentions.
