RIVERSIDE ? The Highland Huskies baseball team won its first regional match-up against Holy Trinity Tuesday evening.
The game started swiftly. Highland pitcher Josh Michel would only allow Holy Trinity's Kyle Bredemeyer to get on first base because he hit him with the ball.
At the bottom of the first inning, Highland scored fives runs and Holy Trinity would be scoreless.
In the second inning, Michel struck out the first batter from Holy Trinity, walked Holy Trinity's Rex Brune ? who would score the first run for his team. After Brune, both batters would get out at first because of Highland's defense.
No one from Highland scored at the bottom of the second inning.
At the top of the third inning, Holy Trinity would score their final run of the game when Cameron Bahl hit a ball into center field.
Highland couldn't get on base at the bottom of the third inning. Freshmen Trey Lasek, junior Trent Lasek and junior Logan Harbison all struck out.
The score was 7 to 2, with Highland on top.
In the fourth inning, the Holy Trinity players would only have two hits at bat and only one player successfully get on base. The rest struck out or were called out at first base.
In the bottom of this inning, Highland's Jake Wood would score after senior Spencer Weiland bunted to bring Wood home.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Holy Trinity batters were no match for Michel's pitching. He struck them all out.
At the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Caleb Brase would get on first base after a hit. Trent Lasek would hit a ball to center field, which allowed Brase to come home making the score 8 to 2.
Harbison hit a line drive to right field and get on second base. Wood would hit a drive to right field, bringing him and Harbison in to make the score 10 to 2.
At the top of the sixth inning, Holy Trinity would again only get one batter on base. The rest would strike out against Michel.
Chase Rath would be the first batter up to the plate for Highland. He hit the ball with a deafening crack and watched it go over the left field fence for the homerun.
Burton would come up to bat next and get to second base.
Trey Lasek would end the game with his hit, bringing Burton home.
The umpire called the game with the final score of 12 to 2.
Highland head coach Seth Millidge said his team was ready to take care of things Tuesday night.
"It's business now," Millidge said. "We're a junior team with a lone senior. They've played a lot of baseball together. They know what they're doing and we were ready to go."
The players showed this during the game, Millidge added.
"We were aggressive at the base bats, we had timely hits [and] we were able to put some pressure on a young team and fortunate to 10 run a team and get us started in the right direction toward hopefully more success this postseason year," Millidge said.
On Thursday, Highland will play its rival Lone Tree at home at 7 p.m.
Millidge said his team is very familiar with the Lone Tree baseball team.
"We've played them this year," he said. "We beat them 8 to 1 but it's the postseason and anything can happen. We're just ready to come play. Chase Rath will be on the hill for us and we feel very confident behind him as a defense; and the things we have to do, we've done all year."
