RIVERSIDE — The 2022 high school season is underway and the Highland and Keota baseball teams made sure the fireworks came early.
Luke Miller’s seventh-inning RBI pushed the Huskies past the Eagles 2-1 in a season-opening, non-conference thriller.
Highland’s Chase Schultz and Colten Clarahan went from the golf course during the day to the pitcher’s mounds at night, and they traded shutout innings through five frames.
Clarahan went 2-for-3 with the lone run for the Eagles, coming in the sixth. Brenton Bonebrake and Ethan Paisley both scored for Highland in the seventh.
Paisley and Trevor McFarland had the only two hits for Highland. Caden Clarahan, Cole Kindred and Chase Sieren all had hits for Keota.
Schultz struck 14 Keota batters out while giving up one earned run on five hits and one walk over seven innings.
Colten Clarahan threw 5.1 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and three walks, while hitting two batters and striking out 12. Caden Clarahan gave up two runs (one earned) over 1.1 innings, but did strike out three Huskies.
