WINFIELD — The Class 1A Region 8 softball semifinal between No. 15 Winfield-Mount Union and Highland stands at a scoreless tie days after the first pitch was delivered.
The game between a pair of Union area squads was suspended in the bottom of the sixth after both teams struggled to score a run in the first five frames on Friday night.
Before a lightning delay ultimately ended play for the night, Highland’s Grace Batcheller and Winfield-Mount Union’s Madie Anderson were going punch-for-punch with dueling shutouts.
With one out and WMU’s Carlee Sloan on third base after a leadoff double and an advancement by Kayreanna Sharar, Highland made a pitching change, swapping Batcheller for Jessica Kraus. Kraus threw two strikes to Wolves’ catcher Anna Anderson when play was stopped.
The game was originally set to pick up on Saturday but a rainy morning washed away those plans. The two teams are set to meet back in Winfield on Monday night at 5 p.m.
When the teams get back to playing, the Wolves will have a runner on third with one out and Anderson up to bat with an 0-2 count.
The winner of the elongated semifinal game will travel to No. 3 Lisbon on Tuesday to play for a berth in the Class 1A state tournament.
