The Union area boasts some talented small-school teams with New London, Sigourney-Keota, Highland and Cardinal all undefeated so far this season.
Mid-Prairie, which has a 2-1 record, is the only team in its district with a winning record. The Golden Hawks will host Iowa City Liberty (2-1) Friday.
Columbus is 1-3 and hosts North Cedar (2-1) Friday while Pekin is looking for its first win when it travels to Davis County. Davis County got its first win last week against Van Buren (0-3), which will travel to Wayne (2-2) Friday.
Cardinal got its last win Sept. 6 when it traveled to Wayne, then had a bye last week. The Comets will host North Mahaska (0-3), which has given up at least 61 points in each of its losses.
WACO and New London will have to come back from the three-overtime thriller played last Friday. The Tigers escaped 56-50.
New London, ranked fifth in 8-man, will host Lone Tree (0-3). WACO (1-2) plays at Montezuma (3-0). Montezuma won at Winfield-Mt. Union last week. W-MU (1-2) plays host to Iowa Valley (2-1).
Highland, Cardinal and SK have all received votes in polling but not enough to enter the Top 10.
The SK Cobras have a high-scoring offense with 34 on the board in the first week, 56 the second and 75 last week. The Cobras host EBF (1-2), which has given up 106 points in its three games.
Highland will have to avoid distractions this week as it is Homecoming for the Huskies.
Lisbon comes to Riverside having ended a 13-game losing streak last week with a 36-26 win over Belle Plaine. Lisbon has three running backs with at least 94 yards rushing this season.
Cole Adamson leads Highland with 482 yards on 55 carries. Owen Donovan has 351 on 40 carries and Connor Grinstead 140 on 27. Grinstead has thrown for 272 yards on 14 of 22 passing with no interceptions and five touchdowns. Mason McFarland has nine receptions for 215 yards and four TDs.
