Ravens defeat HLV, Huskies English Valleys in first round of postseason

RIVERSIDE — Hillcrest Academy and Highland baseball teams kicked off postseason play with commanding victories on Monday night, setting up a compelling second-round showdown.
The Ravens made quick work of HLV at Highland High School, posting a 12-2 win. Hillcrest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. After HLV responded with a solo homer in the second, the Ravens poured on the offense, scoring seven runs across the first two frames.
Hillcrest’s pitching and defense shut down HLV the rest of the way, allowing just one more run in the sixth. The Ravens sealed the mercy-rule win with three additional runs to finish it in six innings.
Lincoln Miller led the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Mason Helmuth and Lawson Schrock each contributed a hit and two RBIs. Liam Schrock, Mason Bender, Seth Ours, and Rowan Miller also drove in runs.
Ours went the distance on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out four over five innings.
Despite trailing 2-0 early, Highland responded with a relentless offensive onslaught, scoring 17 unanswered runs to rout English Valleys 17-2 in four innings.
The Huskies erupted for nine runs between the first two innings and added eight more in the fourth to trigger the mercy rule. English Valleys didn’t score again after their early two-run burst.
Garrett Beeson paced the offense with a hit and three RBIs, while Caleb Wheeler and Ryker Miller each added a hit and two RBIs. Colten Sypherd, Hunter Seibel, William Dunbar, and Bryce Hazelett also contributed RBIs.
Sypherd led the way on the mound, giving up just two hits and two earned runs, while striking out five.
