WEST BURLINGTON — It was a successful Monday night for Hillcrest Academy, as both the baseball and softball teams came away with wins in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North vs. South matchup at West Burlington.
The Ravens’ baseball team delivered a dominant performance, cruising to a 17-6 victory over the Falcons. Meanwhile, the softball team pulled off a hard-fought 3-2 win in a tightly contested game.
On the baseball diamond, both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings before Hillcrest erupted offensively.
The Ravens broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs, their second-highest total in a single inning that night. They followed that up with a seven-run outburst in the fifth, putting up 13 unanswered runs in just two frames.
Although West Burlington responded with six runs of their own across the fifth and sixth innings, the early damage proved too much to overcome. Hillcrest tacked on four additional runs in the final two innings to seal the victory.
Mason Helmuth led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Rowan Miller and Seth Ours each contributed a hit and three RBIs apiece. Mason Bender added a home run and drove in four runs, while Liam Schrock, Lincoln Miller, and Phoenix Anderson each collected a hit.
On the mound, Miller and Schrock combined to allow seven hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out seven.
With the win, Hillcrest Academy improves to 12-7 overall and holds an 11-2 record in SEISC North play, remaining atop the division standings.
The softball game remained scoreless through two innings until Hillcrest Academy broke through in the top of the third with a two-run hit from Delaney Shaw.
The Ravens never relinquished the lead, though West Burlington-Notre Dame stayed within striking distance.
Hillcrest extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning on an RBI from Malia Yoder. WB-ND answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, nearly tying the game, but the Ravens held firm and kept the Falcons off the board for the remainder of the game.
Ella Mize pitched a complete game for Hillcrest, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
With the win, Hillcrest Academy improves to 11-13.
