WAPELLO — The New London volleyball team traveled north to play Wapello in the Class 1A Region 2 tournament on Monday night, but much-like many of the Union area’s 1A teams, the Tigers saw their season come to an end.
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s North Division champions were too much for the visiting Tigers. New London improved in every set but couldn’t take any, as Wapello moved on 25-10, 25-12 and 25-15.
“We always come out just a little slow,” said Tiger head coach Jackie Housman. “It takes them a little bit to get their wits about them.”
The Tiger head coach praised the work of her five seniors, who played their final game in a New London uniform.
“My daughters are around them all the time,” Housman said. “They all help with the youth program. They all come back. They are such good role models for our kids.”
The Tigers weren’t the only area team in the region to get knocked out. WACO suffered a three-set loss to Notre Dame, falling 25-22, 25-14 and 25-17, while Highland fell at home to North Cedar, dropping that one in four sets; 25-17, 22-252, 25-22, 25-23.
In the only Class 1A clash between area squads, Hillcrest Academy pulled past Keota in Class 1A Region 7. The Ravens won each set by the same score, taking it 25-13, 25-13 and 25-13.
Malia Yoder had eight kills and 12 digs in the win for Hillcrest Academy. Claire Withrow dished out 22 assists.
Hillcrest played at home against Belle Plaine in the Class 1A Region 7 quarterfinals on Wednesday night. As of press time, that game has not finished.
