BURLINGTON — The favorites in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys soccer tournament this weekend showed why they are just that. Notre Dame cruised to a conference championship, knocking out a pair of area teams in the process.
The Nikes owned the tournament from start to finish, outscoring opponents 28-0.
The best fight Notre Dame received came from Hillcrest Academy. The Ravens went 1-1 in the tournament to get knocked out in the semifinals.
The Ravens were given the No. 5 seed but pulled a minor upset in the opening round. Hillcrest defeated Central Lee 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Micah Gerber and Diego Ramos both scored goals for the Ravens in the opening round.
Hillcrest’s train came to a stop against the Nikes in the semis. Notre Dame vanquished the Ravens 8-0, although it was the only non-mercy rule win by the Nikes all weekend.
Jorge Canchola led the Ravens with two shots in the loss. Ramos had the team’s only shot on goal, and goalkeeper Aiden Krabill collected 10 saves in net.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union skunked Wapello 5-0 in their quarterfinal game, which pitted the third-seeded Wildcats against second-seeded Mediapolis in the semifinals.
Mediapolis had too much for Columbus/WMU in the semis, knocking the Wildcats out 5-1. The Bulldogs were in turn blistered by Notre Dame, 10-0 in the final.
The Highland Huskies had the No. 8 seed and fell 10-0 to Notre Dame in the opening round. Sixth-seeded Danville-New London had to forfeit to Mediapolis in the opening round due to low numbers.
