KALONA — A non-conference matchup between Fairfield and Hillcrest Academy on Thursday night ended with the Ravens on top 64-49.
The Trojans and Ravens were knotted after the first quarter, but a lopsided second period by the Ravens was the difference maker.
Fairfield couldn’t have started any better as it leapt out to a 6-0 lead off a free throw from Luke Konczal and both a two and three from Riley Perkins.
It didn’t take long for Hillcrest to get right back in the mix as back-to-back buckets, first from Kale Bailey and then a three from Seth Ours, pulled the Ravens to within one, 6-5.
In the final three minutes of the first period, Konczal hit a pair from the stripe for Fairfield, followed by a converted and one from Ours to knot the game at 8-8. By the end of the quarter the two squads were tied at 10-10.
The second period was a difference maker.
A 7-0 run between Ours and Phoenix Anderson kicked started the quarter for the Ravens and they never looked back.
Fairfield struggled to find a bucket in the period as its first points came off a three pointer at the 3:50 mark.
The Trojans scored just six more points, tallying just nine points through eight minutes. Meanwhile, Hillcrest Academy dropped in 20 total, which was good enough to give it a 30-19 halftime lead.
The offensive woes got better in the third for Fairfield, but Hillcrest Academy kept pace.
The Trojans came as close as eight in the opening stages of the third period, which was their lowest deficit the rest of the way.
Fairfield went on to score 18 in the quarter, but Hillcrest added 17 themselves to keep hold of the lead.
In the fourth, a Konczal and one pulled Fairfield to within nine at 49-40, but an 11-2 run gave the Ravens a 18 point advantage, 60-42. That deficit was too great for Fairfield to overcome.
Seth Ours led the Ravens with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in the win. Rowan Miller ended with 13 points and nine assists. Phoenix Anderson had 10 points, Bryce Bailey nine and Mason Bender six.
For Fairfield, Luke Konczal had 12 points and eight rebounds. Riley Perkins finished with 10 points. Ousman had nine points and Ben Boatright seven. Sam Weaton also ended with five points.
Hillcrest played on Friday as well. The Ravens were victorious over Rivermont Collegiate 63-28.
Fairfield traveled to Fort Madison on Friday and was defeated by the Bloodhounds 77-48.
